http://www.heyhotshot.com/blog/2008/10/23/hey-hot-shot-donald-weber/

I submitted three photographs from ‘Bastard Eden, Our Chernobyl.’ Not sure why I went with this work, but it’s still very close to my heart and has the feeling of the most ‘completed’ body of work that I have done. Anyway, she was right on in her assessment of my photo of the orange Lada in the forest.

The latest issue of Prairie Fire Magazine is now on stands in Canada. Larry Frolick and myself have the cover and 26 pages on the inside. Entitled “Exorcism in Carpathia: God, History and Ukraine”, it is the first time Prarie Fire has printed colour photos.

Also interesting is a small spread of black and white photos I collected as negatives from atop a shelf in an empty apartment in the abandoned city of Pripyat, Chernobyl. Despite the fragility, the negatives more or less withstood the elements, which now include radioactive dustclouds.

Today I learned I am one of the recipients of a Guggenheim Fellowship. I am very humbled, as those who precede me are many. The Guggenheim’s purpose is to give fellows “blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible”, but they should also be “substantially free of their regular duties.”

Robert Frank created his “Americans” as a Guggenheim Fellow. Other photographers include Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Gary Winogrand and William Eggleston. Very very very big shoes indeed.
