What is a good story, and how does it get created? What are the steps involved from inception to execution? This workshop looks at the “bookends” of a successful project: creating the “pitch” or the proposal, and looking at the editing and distribution of the work.

In April, I travelled to Canada’s Far North for a commission from Canadian Art magazine, to essentially “shoot what I wanted.” (Richard Rhodes, one of the best editors out there).
A portrait series entitled ‘Quniqjuk, Qunbuq, Quabaa’ is the result, featured in this month’s Canadian Art. Inspired by the seal oil lamp photography of Robert Flaherty (director of Nanook of the North, 1920′s) and Zacharias Kunuk, Inuit filmmaker.

The Grant Writing Workshops have wrapped in Berlin and were a success. Enrico Fabian said “…so at the end I really liked the feeling you brought into this topic…great effort and for me thing worth attending and learning from..” and from Merlin Nadj-Torma, “Don’s grant writing workshop is informative, inspiring and encouraging. So go for it.”

I’m currently in Rome which for the time being will be my new home. After a successful trip to Amsterdam working on the design of the ‘Interrogations‘ book with Teun van der Heijden (whom Photo-Eye calls “by far the most interesting designer working with photographers today”) and Maarten Schilt, and an intense week of learning as part of World Press Photo’s ‘Training the Trainers’ program, looking forward to settling down just a bit – but not too much.

VII Photo and Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) present “Commit to Action,” an auction of prints from the photographers of VII that will support VII’s continued commitment to document the lives of forgotten and neglected populations worldwide, with half of the auction proceeds generously directed to benefit MSF’s medical humanitarian programs. The Flash Forward Festival is an international five-day biennial event launching in Toronto’s Liberty Village from October 6–10, 2010. The Flash Forward Festival is an extension of The Magenta Foundation’s successful annual emerging photographers competition, Flash Forward.

I’ll be a tutor (or ‘Master’) at the SEE New Perspectives Masterclass sponsored by World Press Photo and the Robert Bosch Stiftung in Berlin this Fall and Winter. Fifteen young professional photographers from the Balkan countries will gather for 8 days in September, for workshops, lectures, reviews, etc. They are then tasked to complete a photo essay of their choice in a Balkan country with a final exposition and presentation back in Berlin in December. Really looking forward to this, and am honoured to have been considered a tutor for these talented photographers.

I’ll be instructing a 6-day intensive workshop with friend and colleague Quinton Gordon in the Argentinean city of Buenos Aries. This workshop is designed for photographers who want to take their visual storytelling capacity to a new professional level. I’ll be a participant in the new documentary festival sponsored by OjodePez and La Fabrica. Barcelona, the birthplace of the magazine OjodePez will become, from 15th to 17th July, the starting point for a new key date for international documentary photography.
Three days with an intense programme of mater conference talks, debates, projections in the street, film and portfolio viewings, meaning that we will see experts such as Jamie Wellford, editor of Newsweek; Christian Caujolle, editor of VU; Shahdul Alam, the creator of Drik, and Robert Pledge, the creator of Contact, among others.
The event will also include photographers such as Alex Majoli, Michael Ackerman, Donald Weber, Bloomberg & Chanarin, among others.

It will be an intensive two day seminar over two weeks. We will do some shooting, and discuss portfolios, creating a body of work and the all-important editing.
